Touched My Heart

We as teachers should always be honest with our responses with our children when teaching. Today's lesson was a unique one. It was a wonderful teaching experience for me.

Today's class had two children in my "Returnees" class. ("Returnees" classes are for children who have either lived abroad or are proficient in English.) One was a 7 year-old boy and the other was a 6 year-old girl.

In the middle of the lesson, I began to teach "family members." First, I taught the meaning of "mother and father."

When I explained what "big brother" meant, the little girl said so innocently in English, "My brother died."

I compassionately put my hand on her shoulder and said, "I am so sorry to hear that. You know. My big brother died, too. I did not know him because he died before I was born."

After telling her my experience, the little girl had a pretty smile on her face -- a smile of relief that she was not the only one who had lost a loved one.

This little girl reminded me of a valuable lesson today. "Do not be afraid to share your life with others, especially with children."

Thank you for reading about my experience today.

7. What two countries border the Netherlands?

8. What is the largest city?

Hawaiian Plate Lunch

Hello Readers.

I would like to share with you a little about Hawaii. If you ever have a chance to go there, I highly recommend that you try a Hawaiian plate lunch.

You can order it at almost any restaurant. There are many varieties to choose from. Basically, a plate lunch has a serving of rice or macaroni salad, and an entree of your liking.

Did you know that the origin of the Hawaiian plate lunch has its roots from the Japanese bento? Sugar plantation workers (who had come from China, Japan, Portugal, and the Philippines) would bring their lunches to work in the 1800s.

In the picture below, you can see a Plate Lunch Wagon. If you see one of these vehicles on the side of the road, you ought to stop and buy one of their plate lunches.

I recommend the Pork Barbecue Plate Lunch.

Aloha.

Thank You Hibarigaoka!

Today was such a beautiful day in Hibarigaoka.

Henk, I, and two staff members, Noriko and Yumiko, were handing out balloons to various people on the streets near Ecole Hibari. We had our New Year's Campaign.

As we were handing out balloons, the people graciously accepted them with smiles on their faces.

In the afternoon, we had trial lessons. A father brought his five-year-old son. The boy had a positive attitude about learning a language. As he was participating in the lesson, Henk (who was teaching him) could feel the little boy's enthusiasm towards studying English. He was polite and had wonderful table manners, too.

As I was talking to his father (in English), I quickly understood why the boy was such a happy boy. I could feel that the father was very much involved in his son's life. The boy wanted to demonstrate to his father that he could speak English; and his dad was very supportive.

I believe in this quote -- "A child's behavior is a reflection of his or her parents."

Thank you for this day, Hibarigaoka!

Jidou Eiken

I would like to thank the six children who came yesterday, February 8, to take their Jidou Eiken Tests. Even though it snowed heavily, they were determined to come.

I had fun chatting in English with the children before their tests began. We were watching the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics on television.

I was chanting, "Go USA! Go USA!" I was waving two small American flags in front of them. The boys and gilrs were laughing so hard as I was doing my "cheerleading" routine.

Eventually, some of the children began competing with me. They began shouting, "Go Japan! Go Japan!" I love this kind of competitive spirit. We all had fun.

When it was time to take their tests, they were relaxed. I am sure they performed well.

Peter, Henk, and I are very proud of these children who took the tests. See you all this week at Ecole Hibari.
